The effects of prebiotics and probiotics on irritable bowel syndrome

چکیده :

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) remains a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal symptoms, though its pathophysiology is not yet fully understood. The therapeutic use of synbiotics, a synergistic combination of prebiotics and probiotics, for IBS is still in its early stages. Technological advancements have highlighted the significant role of probiotics in managing IBS. In this study, an extensive search of the literature yielded a total of 245 studies from the three search engines utilized. Of these, only 25 studies were used to draw up the present review. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the various pathophysiologic mechanisms by which probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics act, drawing on multidisciplinary domains such as gastroenterology (microbiota modulation, gut barrier function alteration, visceral hypersensitivity, and gastrointestinal dysmotility), immunology (intestinal immune modulation), and neurology (microbiota-gut-brain axis communication and associated comorbidities) to alleviate IBS symptoms. Furthermore, the review synthesizes current literature on the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of prebiotics and synbiotics in IBS patients, and discusses clinical studies evaluating the efficacy and outcomes of synbiotics as a therapeutic option for IBS.
